Some background to the world famous Dickson family website - by Stephen Dickson
I remember when my dad (David) finally bought his own computer ... it was a major learning exercise for a curious 70 something year old, but he dived straight in there and soon got some genealogy software and started down the route of recording stuff about the family. In the meantime, I managed to persuade him to set out his life on tape (something I've still got when others are ready and want to hear it). Incidentally, I recently handed over to Mick some sound tracks of an early holiday to Spain when we were young lads with Mum and Dad, so that's another job to extract sound bytes to the website sometime. Anyway, around this time, Mick was also starting up an early history of our Dickson family and worked with Dad on the family tree historical elements.
My own interest in computing was moving over to the wonders of the internet and particularly web design. So I made a few early attempts to record my own immediate family using html coding ... some of these early attempts are still resident in my site. It was the start of a natural progression towards developing the website and with a little help from MacroMedia DreamWeaver and my brother Mick, we launched in 2003 this Dickson family website. Progress has been a bit slow because of training and a few overseas visits, but we now have the basis of a site.
The site structure is simple enough to follow and includes access to hundreds of photographs. The Family Tree should be on soon and you will see that Natasha & Darren (Llewellyn) in Australia have now joined us.
Invitation to all Dickson family members
So, for any other member of the Dickson family and extended members including Nicholson and Ireland, we invite you to develop your own personal elements to the overall site. If you want to know how, or indeed know how to do it, please contact myself and I will "talk you through it" . You don't need fancy software ... it can be done through FrontPage Express if you wish (if you have windows 95/98 you should find it by clicking on start/programs/accessories). You will need some File Transfer Protocol software ftp (it's available free), but me or Mick can guide you on this. All we ask is that your site is linked to this main page (we will do this for you) ... the format and content of your site is really down to you, but please have a look through what is already available on the existing sites and links (ie do your research) and try to add new and interesting information about how your side of the family links to the world famous Dickson family.
thanks ... Steve Dickson (webmaster for the world famous Dickson family website)
