| The 20th Century was momentous for the Dickson family, with two World Wars ahead of them. Both our fathers, from working-class backgrounds, in Scotland and in England, fought in the trenches of France, and were wounded during the Great War of 1914 - 1918. This was a disastrous time but they survived. Attitudes changed and money was scarce. Education was the way out, so David studied hard and, with the help of Scottish bursaries, went to St.Andrews University and Teachers Training College and qualified for a teaching career. Muriel was now at a Grammar School in Leicestershire. But then came the Second Great War 1939 - 1945. David and Muriel were called up into the Army...David into RADAR, and Muriel into Enemy Plane Plotting in Yorkshire. THIS IS WHERE THEY MET AND MARRIED IN 1944. At the end of the war, David returned to his teaching career in Scotland and England, eventually becoming Headmaster of various schools in Leicestershire and later a Senior Lecturer in a College in the Lake District.
Meantime Muriel and David were blessed with three sons... Michael, a 'Victory Baby' born in Leics. in 1945, Stephen, born in Angus, Scotland, in 1947. Andrew, born in Leics, in 1951... three quite different personalities but they all made wonderful contributions to the Dickson Clan and worked for the community in the Police, Civil Service and Education. They kept us fully occupied whilst they were growing up, with lots of camping and caravanning holidays in Scotland, England and abroad. It was a great family time. Now we are retired to Rutland in this ever-changing world of the 21st Century, with our varied roles as PARENTS, GRANDPARENTS and GREAT-GRANDPARENTS in the years ahead. November 2004. |
